Why America

A set of observations and opinios by Al Philips, for whomever shall see this page.

"Why America" is both a question and an answer, thanks to the ambiguities of the English language, which describes the intent of this monolog

I suspect that my collected observations and conclusions of life have merit. I wish to put them down for self analysis and possible outside critique. They are intertwined just as life is, and I have not yet have had the time to make an eligant or logically complete. But, today is a start.

Why America

I spent 21 years in the US Navy's submarine service, partially for myself, partially because I feel that our society is imporant to protect. In this period I had time to reflect on the nature of things. I concluded that for each of us the most critical element of our world (Universe) that affects us is our society. It fences us in just as the need for food and security does for a single primative man confronting a world of poisonous plants and cavebears. So why am I healthy and able to have some freedoms while the people in the Nazi concentration camps were marched to their deaths? How did our country come about? How did it evolve? Why are some people in my country better off than in others? Why America?

Why America

I studied the best I could the differences and simularities between nations and cultures. It is not black and white, and histories are seen through foggy opinions. I imagine what a Democrat or a Republican wouold say about GW Bush's Presidentcy, and give weight to historians statements about ancient facts and their causes with the same grain of salt. A country of laws, a Christian work ethic, the Enlightenment, bountiful natural resources, the decimation of indegionous tribes and the assimilation of other cultures, public education, capitolism, socialist business regulation, a democratic Republic vs parlamentary government, the 4 year voting cycle, freedom of press and free speech, etc etc etc. A resonable explaination of the flow of muddy waters finally came into foggy view. And so I have some partial answers to the question and statements as to the support of our system. Those elements that make our system work: Why America!!!
