Ye olde diving alarm

Submarines are dangerous, and worldwide the men who man them train hard to survive in the harsh environment of the Silent Service.  Most Navies award their men will badges and insignia to designate those who qualify this prestige.

Admiral Ernie King designed the submarine badge for the US Navy, utilizing two stylized Greek Dolphins riding the bow wave of a diesel submarine near the bow planes.  These have become known as "Dolphins" to the men serving.

Al Philips of Dolphin Place spent 21 years in the US Submarine Service and periodically makes stained glass art to celebrate tours of modern shipmates.
