Al Philips was studying ancient Japanese pottery and raku techniques when he came across a 18th century vase depicting a koi pond. Using the work as an inspiration, Al created this piece from blown glass then later carved the Koi and filled the engraving in with 24k gold. The inside of the work is cobalt blue and it is magenta with transmitted light.
All large multicolored glass art requires teams of workers: Al wishes to thank Bud Olson and Bennett Jordan for their assistance.
