Pacific Northwest Formline Bowl

Pacific Northwest Formline Bowl

Blown Glass
14" h x 16" w

1996 - $15,000

Al Philips

This work was inspired by a combination of three wonderful attributes of the Northwest.  Two different salmon species have restored runs next to the Dolphin Place Nature Conservancy.  The local natives in Puget Sound create the world's best woven basketry and the formline carving style of the native peoples further north is as significant as any of the European Art of the last 200 years.  This work was blown to be symmetrical.

This work is made by blowing seven layers of glass color into a vase/bowl, then carving the outer layers away leaving a cameo style image using the palate of ochre colors reminiscent of the original carvings.  This has the added attribute of causing the glass to ring softly like a bell.
