Blown Glass:
Glass blowing has been around for thousands of years and was centered at Murano Italy since the Renaissance.  The art of glass blowing is very difficult and the secrets of the craft were passed down by the Masters only on their deathbeds.

In 1971 Dale Chihuly, with the help of John and Anne Hauberg, founded the Pilchuck Glass School.  By 1980 the center of the glass art world had moved to Puget Sound in Washington State.

Al Philips started working in glass in 1976.  He went to the Pilchuck Glass School, did some collaborative work with Dale Chihuly and joined the Seattle Glass movement in 1993.

Blown Glass is an art form.  The best blown glass is done by people with skills similar to great concert pianists.  Large multi-colored pieces are done by teams.  Each of the pieces shown here were done by Al Philips, but he wishes to acknowledge and thank the many people who made up the teams that assisted him and the artists who shared their knowledge:
