Licorice fern Polypodium glycyrrhiza
Scouler ferns are uncommon in Puget Sound and have not been observed
on Bainbridge Island. They are related to licorice ferns but do not tolerate
drought. Our scouler fern hails from the Hood Canal area and now resides
5' above high tide on a seep in a bank in our fern gully, with fair but
not direct light. ,
They are eveergreen. The fronds die back in the fall while the new growth
starts. The fronds grow up to 16" long. They
are observed to grow on mossy sitka spruce if
moist enough.
