Giant Chain Fern

Giant Chain Fern Woodwardia fimbriata

This species was found on the western bluffs of Bainbridge by the USGS. This is the northern limit of this fern which is much more common in Oregion and California.

Our collection was provided to us by John van den Meerendonk of the Bainbridge Fern Society and BOTANICA in 2004. These are the largest ferns at the

Tree Garden and reside 15' above sea level so that their tempurature extremes are minimized.

They are in shade with a small hill of dry alluvial soil and a wet seep under a large cedar allowing the plants to spread to an optimum location on their own.

There is an opening to the northern sky which increases the ambient light. They are evergreen in our environment, sending out new growth in June.
