Deer fern Blechnum spicant
Deer fern are native to Bainbridge and the Native Tree
Garden. They share the same habitat as Lady Ferns, wet, low light forest
understory. They seem to be able to tolerate even less light than the
Lady ferns. They are quite intolerant of drying out.
Deer ferns are evergreen plants with two different fronds, fertile and
non-fertile. They grow about 24" across and 12" high, and when the vertical
fronds occur in late summer, they may grow 32" high.
